Our Christmas Tree

We found a great LITTLE Christmas tree!   Considering I didn’t bring all of our decorations, we needed to find a small tree.

There were many Chooose & Cut Farms to choose from.  The high country of North Carolina is the mecca of Christmas Tree Farms.  We decided to patronize a neighbor, so we went to Brown’s right near the cabin.

We spent the evening setting up and decorating our perfect little tree.  Complete with more snow flurries, Christmas music, hot apple cider, a nice fire in the fireplace and a GREAT family, yesterday couldn’t have been a better day!

Sledding in Boone

After a false start yesterday (when I said Evan nor I have driven in snow for 15 years, I meant 15 years for me, but 30 years for him!), we finally got out on the roads today.

Our mission was to find and cut our own christmas tree, and maybe get in a little sledding.  We bought a few saucers at Walmart and headed out!

Our first sledding fun was in the park in Blowing Rock.  But we found a perfect spot on a nice smooth hill at ASU.  We spent hours sledding down and racing down the hill.  Mady and Goo had a marathon race going on the entire day, to see who could go the farthest in an unassisted run.   We laughed and giggled the whole time.  Not only was this fun, but walking and running back up the hill hundreds of times is also great exercise.  (It sure beats and air conditioned smelly gym)

The day turned out to be sunny and warm enough that we even shed our jackets in the snow.

This is turning out to be a picture perfect family Christmas vacation!   By the way, we determined the girls’ race to be a tie!

(We also got our Christmas tree)

Our Gingerbread House

Our Holiday activities are getting underway with gusto!  We have Christmas music playing on the CD player, we dressed the cabin with little white lights and set out all our cabin Christmas decorations.  We hung our stockings by the chimney with care!

Tomorrow we are planning to go cut down our own Christmas tree, as long as the roads are cleared.

Wayne, our maintenance manager, has gone through the development with his tractor plow and our roads are almost down to the pavement, but we have no idea what the resst of the roads are like throughout Boone.  But for today, it doesn’t matter.  Today is Gingerbread House day!

It has been a family activity.  I packed the gingerbread house mold that I have had for years.   I was also careful to plan for this, and brought (or bought) all the candy decorations we would need to make a complete and ‘perfect’ gingerbread house.  Everyone participated, and our house came out very unique with everyone’s personal touch.  🙂

It was a great family wintertime activity for a great snow covered day in the mountains!

Ray’s Weather says 18 inches!

By the time we woke up Saturday morning, Ray’s weather reported that Boone received 18 inches of snow!   It was truly a Winter Wonderland!  We spend the whole day walking and playing in the snow.

Luckily, we had the foresight to shop for the entire week.  With this snow, combined with the fact that our SUV is NOT a 4WD vehicle, coupled again with the knowledge that neither Evan nor I have driven in snow for over 15 years, we would never make it out of the development, much less down to  the stores and back.

Somehow being stuck together in the snow makes this even a more special family time!

Snow keeps coming

It snowed all day and evening Friday.  The kids used an old shovel as a sled and had a blast using Jenna as a sled dog.  It was a real Norman Rockwell experience!

Mady quickly learned that a Florida dog has no idea how to be a sled dog.

While we were having a fantastic time in the snow, the only bad part was that Jordan and his girlfriend could not visit us from NY.   Their flight was booked for Friday, and while they could fly into Charlotte, they would never get up to Boone with all the snow on the roads.

Divine Intervention?

For some reason beyond my reasoning, I blocked off the cabin for our use starting on a Thursday.  Normally, we arrive on Fridays and stay through both weekends, but for some reason, I (accidentally?) picked Thursday.

As it got closer and closer to the departure date for our Christmas Vacation, we saw the weather forecast was calling for a major blizzard to hit Boone on FRIDAY!

Our drive to the cabin was an uneventful 12 hour ride.  Evan & I stopped at Lowe’s Foods for groceries, keeping in mind that we might be snow bound for a few days.

This is our car after spending over $400 on groceries and supplies for the week, including our Christmas & Christmas Eve Dinner:

We have an SUV.  The entire trunk and backseats were piled to the ceiling with food and supplies to keep us happy and warm for the entire week, if need be.

When we awoke today, Friday, the sky was threatening.  My mission was to get the family to haul as much firewood and even sundry twigs and logs from our woods close enough to the cabin so we could get it in case the power goes out and we have to rely on the fireplace for light and warmth.

We moved 2 entire trees that had been downed earlier this year and piled the wood behind the cabin.  The kids also gathered about a yard of smaller twigs and branches to use for kindling.

We have about 1/2 cord of wood, but we could go through that if the power goes out for a prolonged period.  We have underground power lines, but you never know.

We finished about 11AM just as the snow started.  It came down slowly at first.  We all enjoyed walking and playing in the light snow dusting the ground.  We walked down to the river and enjoyed the snowflakes on our faces and eyelashes.

Goo loved catching the snowflakes on her tongue and Jenna seemed to really enjoy her first experience with snow.

We romped for a bit by the river and realized the snow was starting to come down heavier.  By the time we got back to the cabin, there had to be 2 inches on the ground.  They are predicting 16!

While we all love the snow and will have a wonderful time romping and playing in it, the disappointment is that Evan’s son and his girlfriend will not be able to make the trip to the cabin to join us.  Even if they are able to fly into Charlotte, with the snow that is predicted, they will not be able to make the drive up the mountain to the cabin.  Sad.

We are spending Christmas in the cabin in Boone!

I am so excited! We decided to spend Christmas in Boone this year! We will drive up Dec 17 and come back Dec 27, so the kids can spend some good Holiday time with their dad. We plan to cut our own Christmas tree and have a real old fashioned Christmas, something it is difficult to feel in Florida.

It would be nice to get that old Christmas spirit I used to feel in Connecticut. So far all 3 of my children are joining us, and one of Evan’s son and his girlfriend will be meeting us at the cabin. It will be such a perfect family getaway!

Upper Creek Falls

CIMG3901
Upper Creek Falls is a gorgeous series of falls and cascades in Burke County NC.  It is a short drive on Hwy 181 off the Blue Ridge Parkway MM 312.5.

CIMG3857A short hike from the parking area, you come to some impressive smooth rocks with water cascading over them. Do not walk over these rocks! They are very slippery with algae and the fall off the rocks would be a deadly one.

CIMG3878If you hike a short distance to the left, you will come upon some fantastic swimming holes. Some are shallow and wadable. Others are deeper and great diving holes too. Be careful, all the rocks are covered with algae and very slippery. We all loved wading in the water, and our lab loved diving into and swimming in the cool pools of clean mountain water. Fetching sticks was fun for her, and fun for us to watch, as she got confused between all the sticks that were available. The water was a bit chilly for our bones, but the dog was in heaven.

One of our favorite spots in all of Upper Creek Falls is this swimming hole pictured below. You can get to it by climbing across some smooth rocks. There is a great rope swing for swinging into the cool water. The trickle of water cascading down over the rocks makes a perfect water slide. GREAT FUN!

Virginia Creeper Bike Trail

Virginia Creeper TrailThe Virginia Creeper Bike Trail is an 18 mile trail along a former railroad track bed.   If you start at the top at Whitetop Station, the trail is mostly a gentle 5° downhill grade.

There are a few companies that will rent you the mountain bikes and truck you up to the top of Whitetop.  It is relatively inexpensive for a full day of fresh air, mild exercise and gorgeous scenery. (about $25)

There are bathrooms along the way, and in a few places you can even get something to eat.  Bring hand sanitizer!  The bathrooms are mostly waterless!

Your ride will take you through different varied terrain.  You will pass through Mt. Jefferson National Forest, along rivers and creeks, past many gorgeous waterfalls and through picturesque valleys.  You can stop along the way to picnic, to drink in the scenery, to hike a bit or to just rest.

There are many trestles and bridges along the ride.  I think there are 40 something in all.  Here is a link to a great website with tons of pictures of all the trestles.  VA Creeper Trail  I didn’t know they could be so pretty and photographic.

It is a lovely excursion for a nice day.  The ride can take as long as you wish, but a typical amount of time would be about 3 hours.  When we got back down to the bottom of the trail, we wanted to go back to the top and do it again.

Try it.  You will love it!

More Rental Agent Issues

OK, now I am getting angry.  We arrived back to our cabin to find that we had 3 things stolen and the hot tub was disgusting.

The rental agent’s cleaning staff is supposed to take an inventory of our property.  We discovered that a large frying pan and a laundry basket were missing, but the thing that amazed us the most was that a painting was stolen off the wall!  The hook was left, but the painting was gone!

I can understand how a cleaning person could miss a frying pan…but a HUGE PAINTING???

On top of this, the hot tub was dank and disgusting.  The rental agent DENIED any responsibility.  He blamed the hot tub maintenance guy.  Well… it turns out that the hot tub maintenance guy is the rental agent’s BROTHER IN LAW!  We learned that he did not have a license to service hot tubs.

Suffice it to say, we are rectifying the situation!
